It's the end of an iconic period for long-running series, with Toei Animation revealing a new production schedule for the beloved series, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included numerous filler arcs. Commencing in January, once the current storyline concludes, the animated series will go on a three-month break until April, when the Elbaph arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
From now on, One Piece will release a pair of cours every annually for a cap of 26 episodes. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the heart of the ONE PIECE world — incorporating more content, tempo, and pacing of the source material.” However, Toei end by promising “exciting surprises” during the hiatus period, which suggests additional related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, set to premiere during this gap.
Previous Hiatus Benefits
The One Piece anime previously took a half-year pause that started in October 2024 and concluded in April 2025. The hiatus was for the production team to enhance the visuals and let the comic to build a lead to avoid a faster anime pace and lengthy recap episodes. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver fans with countless action sequences, superior graphics, and less filler than previously.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the positive effects of this new production schedule far surpass the occasional interruption in the story. This also gives the original work, which is currently in the thick of the Elbaph arc, to extend its lead on the adaptation. Per the news, this may result in a single installment of the series adapting a single manga chapter, with some alternatively covering one and a half chapters or more to compensate for scheduling.
This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the last big series to ditch the traditional method of creation, which prioritized being on air for almost the entire year. This explains why classics such as Naruto, and naturally One Piece have so many side stories, and the standard of the art can change drastically between one episode and the following. Today, series creation is organized in cours, with a couple maximum releasing each annually, allowing for better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
